The Ensemble
The Foolish Ensemble is inspired by the historic practices of Shakespeare’s time and made up of our most frequent collaborators. Shakespeare worked with a set ensemble of artists who intimately knew one another, the playing spaces, and the community in which they resided. Whether you see a classical or contemporary production; the development of new work; or a film our ensemble’s passion for the work and the audience’s interaction/integration with it is at the forefront.
We have a high bar set for members of our ensemble. We accept only serious actors who are serious not only about the work, but collaboration and maintaining/developing the home that is Foolish Production Co. The ensemble works at the highest level of collaboration- our pre-show ritual includes each member (cast, crew, front of house, etc) of the production to come to a hands in huddle. This is followed by each member being required to to every individual involved, making eye contact, finding a consentual touch point (usually the shoulder) and stating “I’ve got your back,” and MEAN it. We know our job is to make one another look good and we can’t do that if we are not showing up at our highest calibur.
Frequent attendees may well start to recognize cast and crew members across productions even though the ensemble does not fill every role. Having long term opportunities to inhabit and understand the unique playing conditions that come with our unique choice in spaces, deepening an understanding of Shakespeare’s world and language, all serves to make richer, more embodied work, which in turn extends to our audience who become the final member of this collective theatrical experience.

The ensemble varies as members will come and go as they please- but the values and spirit of the ensemble remain the same. Foolish is a community, a home base in which those who leave us are always welcomed back with open arms.
Ensembleship is by invitation only. Open roles in our productions are often filled by those who have come to out to see our productions, taken class with us, or have been referred. We do still hold auditions.
